4E Mrs Young / Mr Mooney
Welcome to Class 4E (Yr3/4)
Welcome back to a new and very different kind of school term! Thank you for all of your support during the lockdown. As we get used to the ‘new normal’ we will try to keep routines as ‘normal’ and consistent as possible for our pupils.
My name is Mrs Young and I will be teaching Year 3/4 along with Mr Mooney and our teaching assistants (Mrs Honey and Mrs James). We will be there to guide, support and nurture all the pupils in Class 4E this year. We cannot wait to watch the children grow in a classroom buzzing with fantastic ideas, lots of laughter and great friendships.
We will begin the term by ensuring that our children feel happy and secure in their new classes, despite the lack of our usual induction days. Time will be given to circle time activities and class discussion. We will also revisit our school rules, Mission Statement and class saints.
Inevitably, pupil’s learning will need a jumpstart to try and make up for lost time. Therefore the autumn term will see a focus on basic Maths and English skills.
In English, we will be using the story of Michael Bond’s Paddington to engage pupils with their reading and writing. Careful collective sharing and modelling will produce final pieces of narrative and non-narrative writing. There will also be an emphasis on handwriting, spelling and grammar skills.
In Mathematics, we are rolling out the Power Maths scheme which was successfully implemented in Key Stage 1 last year. Pupils will be taught in separate year groups. The scheme emphasises discussion and careful questioning in order to encourage pupils to demonstrate their understanding and then further challenge themselves.
To broaden the curriculum we have reviewed the areas not taught in school because of the Covid-19 lockdown and will be covering many of these areas in Science and Topic work – including: map skills, chronology/timelines, safe internet use, food technology, reflections (Art), classical composers, light/shadows and electricity.
Many pupils and parents have asked about the Sacramental Programme. Obviously we are guided by Father Robert and will make details available once it is safe and he has confirmed his plans with us.
NB – Y4 Swimming is due to take place in the spring term – once we have more information about how the leisure centre is organising its risk assessments.
Below is some additional administrative information which will provide clarity on some other routines.
