Art

Our school vision for teaching Art

“I am seeking. I am striving. I am in it with all my heart.”

Vincent Van Gogh

At St Patrick’s Primary School, we believe that art stimulates creativity, emotions, imagination and inventiveness. Art gives our pupils the skills, concepts and knowledge necessary for them to develop new ideas and experiences. Art provides a wide range of opportunities to ignite the imagination through curiosity and interests.

Art should enable the children to communicate what they see, feel and think. Children should experiment with their ideas, their use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes. We encourage children to collaborate on large-scale art projects, evident around our school, developing the values of joy, peace and hope.

We use sketchbooks to develop the skills of drawing, shading and showing progression in their artistic ability. We encourage children to follow guidance and then to develop the new techniques on their own. Self-evaluation of sketching is encouraged and children are taught how to recognise different pencil types and their effect on paper.
