Welcome to the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Here at St Patrick’s, the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is made up of a two Reception classes.  Our EYFS staff work together as a team to provide quality provision which enables each child to develop their talents, personalities and abilities in a safe and stimulating environment. Each year we enrol 45 children into Foundation Stage and the children are separated into two classes.  Each class is mixed ability and our transition process is thorough, we liaise with Nurseries, childminders and parents prior to children starting school to ensure that each child has a positive start in the September.

Our Philosophy for Learning

In Foundation Stage, in God’s love, we play, learn, explore and grow together as friends.

At St Patrick’s School we aim to provide a safe and comfortable environment for children to become independent thinkers who can explore their environment with curiosity.  We strive to put in place the foundations on which the children build their future learning.  We have high expectations for all our children and encourage them to develop as confident and successful learners with high aspirations, who know how to make a positive contribution to their community.  Pupils learn to share, work independently and play with others. We focus on speaking and listening and improving communication skills.  Our classrooms are designed to have communication friendly spaces where there is plenty of opportunities to talk, listen and communicate with adults and other children, conversations are an opportunity to learn and search together.

We provide children with the essential skills of reading, writing and mathematics, so that these can be used as the foundations for successful learning across the curriculum in further years.  Bug Club and Power maths are used to support learning in these areas.

We have a thematic approach to learning in Foundation stage and both teacher-led and independent learning opportunities are based around these themes.  The themes are tailored to the interests of the children and plans are adapted to follow these interests.  We use age appropriate quality texts to enhance the learning within the theme.  Activities are planned to teach the children the necessary skills and knowledge in the seven EYFS areas of learning:

  • Communication and Language
  • PSED
  • Physical Development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematical Development
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

At St Patrick’s we use ‘Evidence Me’ to record observations of each child. This is an online electronic record of each child’s achievements. These observations inform our assessments. We encourage parents to contribute to this regularly as well.

We hold 2 parents evenings each year. One in the Autumn Term and one in the Spring Term. In the Summer Term parents receive a written report containing information about their child’s progress. Our staff are always available to speak to either in person or on the telephone.
