Unit 3 – Spring 2019

Welcome back to an exciting Spring Term.  This term we will be exploring the big question – Saving God’s Earth – Are We Too Late?  Pupils will explore the effect we are having on our oceans through our use of plastics.  Pope Francis asked us to look after God’s environment in his work ‘Laudato SI’ – On Care For Our Common Home, so pupils will discuss how and why we use plastics and how we can promote ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’.  See below for our new Task Bank Challenges which you can complete with your child at home in order to enhance their learning!

Pupils engaging with the Sacramental Programme will shortly receive a list of dates for the programme.  This year much of the discussion will take place within school but there are several important Church based sessions.  If you wish your child to participate please speak to Mr Mooney as soon as possible.

In English, initially, we will begin by exploring how to create a persuasive letter, which can be used in conjunction with our topic work.  The pupils will also learn elements of grammar and punctuation both discretely and in context. Our text based work will largely use the ‘Write Stuff’ ideas of Jane Considine, which encourages pupils to develop writing skills through sentence stacking in quality examples and sentence stacking.  Daily reading sessions at school and home are an essential component in developing a firm understanding of reading strategies.  Spellings will be sent home each Friday for testing the following Friday.

In Mathematics, we will focus heavily on elements of fractions, statistics and measures.  Pupils will also continue to engage in their Big Maths Challenge every week (which aims to improve calculation fluency, arithmetical speed, as well as consolidating the outer areas of Mathematics, such as fractions and measures).  It is highly advantageous if pupils are encouraged to learn their times tables up to 12 x 12.  Maths homework is given out each Friday, to be returned the following Thursday (this allows the child to speak to the teacher if further help is required).

Year 4 will continue their swimming lessons each Thursday morning until ½ term, while Y3 will continue with their Forest Schools work (please refer to the letter which was sent home about which week they require their outdoor shoes.   .
